What would you use binoculars for? Obviously, a good pair of binoculars is going to be able to let you get a closer look at things that are far away but there are many situations where a closer look at something would be helpful and there are binoculars specifically designed for certain types of situations.
Military and law enforcement need binoculars for tracking down bad guys, protecting our borders, search and rescue operations etc. Campers, hikers and backpackers need a good pair of binoculars for navigation and planning a route when trekking through the woods as well as enjoying the scenery and viewing wildlife. Bird watchers need a good pair of binoculars for observing and identifying various species of birds. Astronomy enthusiasts would use binoculars for locating stars, planets and constellations. Binoculars can also come in handy at sporting events when you need to get up close to the action.
There are many situations where a good pair of binoculars would come in handy but not just any pair of binoculars will do. The way you intend to use a pair of binoculars will go a long way toward helping you decide which pair will be right for you. If you are a backpacker, hunter, fisherman or anyone that is going to be using their binoculars out in nature, getting a pair that is water resistant and impact resistant would be a good idea because your binoculars will be exposed to the elements and you may need a rugged pair that can take a beating if you are spending a lot of time roughing it in the wilderness. You might also want to look for a pair that is relatively light weight because if you are going to be walking a long distance every little bit of extra weight adds up.
If you are going to use your binoculars for watching sporting events the weight of the binoculars won’t be as much of an issue because you will spend much of the day sitting down and you can put your binoculars down when you’re not using them, you don’t have to carry them like you would if you were hiking or backpacking. For sporting events one of the most important things is going to be the magnification. You want to get as close to the action as possible and see what’s going on up close as if you were on the field.
Someone that uses their binoculars for astronomy is going to need a pair that will let a lot of light in. A pair of binoculars with a large diameter objective lens and a good size exit pupil allows more light to come in making it easier to spot stars, planets and constellations.
There are hundreds of uses for binoculars and there are as many pairs to choose from as there are ways to use them. When you know exactly how you intend to use a pair of binoculars it will be easier to choose the right pair for the job.
