When it comes to astronomy the first thing that comes to a lot of people’s minds is the need for a telescope but telescopes are not the only way to get a closer look at the night sky. A good pair of binoculars can do the trick and may even have a few advantages over a telescope. We will discuss some of those advantages and give you some suggestions on finding a good pair of astronomy binoculars.
A good telescope is going to offer more magnification than a pair of binoculars will but a good pair of astronomy binoculars will have some other benefits over a telescope. An obvious benefit is that binoculars are smaller and lighter weight. This makes them easier to transport. Binoculars will also give you a wider field of view which can make it easier to locate certain objects in the night sky. Binoculars will also be a lot less expensive than a decent quality telescope.
Good Magnification and Large Objective Lens

Obviously, more magnification means you will be able to get a closer look at whatever it is you are trying to observe. In addition to good magnification you’ll also need to find a pair of binoculars that has a large objective lens. A larger objective lens lets more light in which is crucial for nighttime use. Good magnification and a larger objective lens will also let you see fainter stars and you will be able to see more detail.
High Quality Optics
A large lens with good magnification is important but it is also very important to make sure your astronomy binoculars offer high quality optics. Cheaper, lesser quality lenses and prisms could greatly reduce image quality. It’s also a good idea to make sure the lenses have a good coating. There are a variety of lens coatings like aluminum, fluoride, silver, magnesium and others and coated lenses will give you much greater image quality.
Exit Pupil
Another thing to take into consideration is the exit pupil of your astronomy binoculars. The exit pupil is the amount of light that comes in through the objective lens and comes out of the eyepiece. The exit pupil can be calculated by dividing the diameter of the objective lens by the magnification. If your binoculars are described as 10×50 this means that the magnification is 10x and the diameter of the objective lens is 50 millimeters. In this example your binoculars would have an exit pupil of 5 millimeters. A larger exit pupil is allowing more light to enter the binoculars and can help improve image quality.
